|Dr. Peterson, Ga.Tech President
to Address NCA
The Northwest Community Alliance is pleased to announce
that Dr.G.P. "Bud" Peterson will be our special guest speaker
at the next meeting of the NCA on Wednesday, May 15th
7PM. The event will take place at the Senior Services Center of
Metropolitan Atlanta, 1705 Commerce Drive Atlanta, Ga.
Dr. Peterson was named President of Georgia Tech on
February 25, 2009, having succeeded G. Wayne Clough as
head of this famed institution. From 2000 until 2006 Dr.
Peterson was provost at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
President Peterson graduated from Kansas State with a B.S.
in Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics and received his
doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M in 1985
where he also taught and served in many responsible teaching
and administrative positions.
We are all familiar with the terrific world wide reputation of
Georgia Tech and their lofty place among the great technical
institutions in the world. We are looking forward to learning
more about Dr Peterson and about his responsibilities as
president of Tech.
One of the many reasons that prompted our invitation is the
work of the Westside Communities Alliance ably led by
Dr.Jacqueline Royster, Dean of the College of Arts and
Technology. The NCA has worked with Dr. Royster as Georgia
Tech continues to support her efforts working with a broad
community coalition to reach out to Tech's next door
neighbors to help. We believe that her efforts and the efforts
of the WCA will only grow and continue to place Ga.Tech as
one of the most responsive universities in the country.
In addition we see this as a follow up to some degree to the 4
meetings that we have held on the stadium over the last 2
years, and particularly our last meeting with the President of
the Blank Foundation attended by 6 Atlanta City Council
members. This is not just about the stadium. This is about
Vine City, English Ave and the adjacent neighborhoods, and
tons of enthusiasm, and passion that has coalesced in an
very real effort to help bring about meaningful change right in
the heart of a historic area with its great civil rights legacy.
The constructive role of all the universities in the area will
make it easier to accomplish the goals of the neighborhoods,
the goals of the Mayor and the goals of the people of Atlanta.
Dr. Peterson has kindly agreed to take questions after his
Please note that we are waiting on another possible guest but
